Friday Flashback

Mother May I?

This was a game that we played as kids, and I'm sure many of you did as well. My memory is playing it with my two sisters in the living room.

Who ever was the "Mother" would stand on the fireplace, while the other two of use "children" were on the other side of the room by which we called "The Pass-through". The two children would take turns asking "Mother may I, take' x' giant/regular/baby steps forward/backward?" "Mother" would reply with either a "yes," or a "No you may not, you make take ' x' giant/regular/baby steps forward/backward." Whoever made it across the room and touched mother first would win. It was totally a game of favorites, but fun nonetheless. Boy did we get creative. I remember taking somersaults, cartwheels and airplanes forward and backward.

  1. I used to play that on the sidewalk with my kids.. and Red Light Green Light, too :)

  2. Erika, please thank your big sis for introducing me to that Harvey Danger video. I watched the first time about a week ago, totally forgot about it, then last I couldn't sleep and suddenly it popped back in my head. Today I dug around trying to remember where I saw it (found it through your link to her site again), and since then I've played it like 10 times!

  3. That was me by the way

  4. How come you never ask, "Mother May I" anymore??

What, you think YOU are the head cheese now?

Got 2 other fellow bloggers started on the Friday Flashback too, thanks doll! (one even linked to you!)

  5. When I was a kid, and we played Mother May I, the mother told you to take (x)giant/baby steps, (x) scissor whacks, (X)umbrella turns, (x) bunny hops, etc, and if you did them without first asking Mother May I, you had to go back and missed out on your turn of going forward...but thanks for bringing back that memory...
