Look What I Made - Book Clock

So I was stumbling one fine afternoon when I came across a neat little craft. I always find crafts that I want to make, but this was one I could make! I found the craft/directions here.

I thought this clock would be a great gift for my friend Jessica, since she is a school teacher and her birthday was coming up. Though she only teaches first grade - and I'm not really sure if 1st graders know how to or learn to tell time at that age... it was still cute! The first picture of the example was even her favorite book too... though I did need to call her and oddly ask "what is your favorite childrens book?." After I got that answer, I went to work.

No need to really explain in detail how I did it. There are again, directions here. I did make a few modifications. I wanted to conceal the "boxy part" of the clock. Knowing she already owned this book and wouldn't need it for reading, I cut a hole through the middle of the pages... it seemed to conceal the "box" more and allow the pages to spread out - as the book is propped open to stand up.

I also didn't put on all the numbers. It just looked odd and blocked the picture too much for my taste. So instead for 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 & 11 i used the little clear nubs that go on the bottom of things to keep them from scratching the table. I think it turned out good, it allows you to see the picture and still gives you something to reference the time with!

So, what do you think?

Friday Flashback - Food!

(CLOSED) Contest! Win a Birthday present!!

I started this blog because life was getting hectic yet boring. I wanted somewhere where I could note the important, but mostly unimportant things that were happening and would happen. Subconsciously and probably more accurately, I wanted something to fill up the down-time created by avoiding homework and studying. Though I'm out of college, the blog continues!

I was going to do a contest, with an actual physical prize, because I was nearing my 700th post. After further investigation, I realized that blogger was counting all those drafts I had started and not finished. After deleting all of those, I have come to the sad realization that this is only post 667. I thought about not doing a contest, but since I made mention of it and because I had gotten really excited about doing a contest.... I'm doing it anyway! There is no way I can keep this prize until my 700th post. Once I have my mind set, there is no stopping it!

How to enter:
So, the contest is simple. Just create a post on a pre-existing blog mentioning and linking to these two things:

My blog "Erika Jean" -
My "contest" -

...It could be as simple as "Erika Jean is running a contest on her blog... go check it out!"

Then come back here and tell me that you have posted and would like to be considered for the prize! That earns one entry!

I will double check all contest entries!

How to earn extra entries:
If you have more than one blog you may post on each blog and will receive additional contest entries - just be sure to mention that in the comments!

If your post linking to my blog is at least 200 words about my blog you will receive one extra entry. You could write about my blog in general, what you like about my blog, your favorite post, how you found my blog or anything else you can think of pertaining to my blog! If you are new to my blog I suggest checking out the Favorite tab at the top! Again, please note you have done this in the comment that you leave.

How the winner will be decided:
I will compile a list of the contest entrants and then pull the winner out of a hat! I hope to document the event by either photo or video.

So what are you waiting for? Post and enter!!

The last day to enter is Wednesday September 24th.(CLOSED)
The winner will be posted on this blog the following day, September 25th.

$25 Gift card for Best Buy! (yes I know it says happy birthday!! The plain one was ringing up wrong, so this is what you get... but hey, you can win a b-day present even if it isn't your birthday!!) is ineligible! Sorry, I hope you still love me!

Under Water Experiment

Sooo I've been wanting an underwater camera or a cheap underwater case... But I haven't had much luck at Walmart (which is really the only place I looked). The only other option I could afford was an underwater disposable... but those run $10-15 dollars and you only get 24 or so exposures...then you have to pay for developing and either get a cd made or scan them to get them on the computer- plus the people who develop them get to see all the outtakes... and some of them were VERY unattractive!

So I got to thinking.....

I was going to stick one of my old digital cameras in a sandwich bag or two and try it underwater (wasn't 100 percent satisfied with that idea either)... but when I got to the cabinet I saw the vacuum seal bags. They worked GREAT... the only thing I had to do was mess with the bags a little so it didn't suck out ALL of the air (the button would get vacuum sealed down! lol)

Question of the Day. Will She Read My Blog Post or E-mail First? (Mom you can Answer in the Comments)

I usually send my mom e-mails so she has something to read in the morning. After re-reading this one before hitting send...I am kind of surprised she hasn't had me committed yet. who knows, maybe that day is coming...?

To: Mom
Subject: SUNDAY wake-up call from baby Jesus.

Good morning mother. If you go to ihop or brueggers(spell check wanted me to change that to buggers! ew, I'll pass on buggers for breakfast...) WAKE me. haha just thought I'd say that so there was no confusion ;-)

Anyway, my real purpose of writing this was to let you know that the two rags in the sink should probably not be used. There was a crazy amount of chicken juice that pretty much glued an ad to the counter... I used them to clean it up... so they are probably full of salmonella-ella-ella-ay

Also... I'll clean my chair area up when I get up. I'm just about to die from sleepiness right now ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzZiZtZiZsZ2ZaZmZZzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZzZZ

Also. I think something is wrong with my bike tire.

Also. You are awesome.

Also. I am awesomererer.

Also. I think I am over worked(HA!) and under slept.

Also. like what like am I like doing. Its like I don't want to like end this like um such as this e-mail. am I like um like coming like across like clearly?

With Love,
Yo' Daughter (aka your favorite daughter, aka the only one not adopted...)

Friday Flashback - Castle Skateland

Castle Skateland, the name gives it away. It's a skating rink located in my hometown, Loveland, Ohio. I feel like I know that place like the back of my hand... though I haven't been there in about 10 years. I'm sure it hasn't changed much. It is a large indoor skating rink with an faux castle front. I wish it really was a castle.

As you walk up the steps into the front door you get in line or gather your group in the lobby. You then go up to the window and pay an entrance fee. As soon as you get in you stake out a bench/seat area. The benches were round or square and low to the floor. They were also covered in the same short carpet as the floor, and equally as dingy. Man, I hope they've changed that stuff. That place always had a certain musky smell to it.

There at the benches we'd change out of our shoes, into our skates and stash our stuff in the middle or underneath. Usually mom or dad would hang out here while we skated around and around and around.

By the benches there were arcade games, which we usually never played, or didn't play much because we were only allowed to use a dollar or so. Then after the arcade games came the bathrooms. There were separate male and female restrooms, but the sinks were out side the restrooms in the open so you could just roll on up. I think there might have been a drinking fountain there to. Or maybe it was just a drinking fountain? Maybe I don't remember as much as I thought... on the opposite end was the snack bar. The snack bar was pretty much the highlight of the place. We were almost always treated to some yummy items and a slushie. I remember a seating area over there with very unattractive orange benches. Above the snack bar was the "adults only" area. I'm pretty sure it was a bar? I don't really know, I was never allowed to go up there! They cleverly designed that area. What kid can climb stairs in skates? It kept us out.

They had nasty tan un-supportive looking rental skates, which I don't think I ever wore... and probably could not have been forced to. Thinking about them right now, I still wouldn't wear them... grosser than bowling shoes in my eyes. Next to the rental skates you could redeem tickets from the arcade games and buy glow sticks or plastic rings. A must.

On the other side of the rink was an ally way. I think it was carpeted with that short stuff too, or atleast it was at one point. Back there we would skate as straight, hard and fast as we could. At the end was a wooden bench rest area, where the cooler and older kids sat. I think I've been there before ;-)

As for actual skating, I was not a wall hugger (a person hanging on to the wall for dear life), no one in may family was. During the visit, the announcer guy would change up the rink every once and a while. He'd change directions, make it kids only, couples only, girls only, boys only, etc. At one point we'd all gather in the middle for the the chicken dance and the hokie pokie. We'd also kick off our skates and have a dance contest. The winner would win a dancing flower. It responded to sound and would dance when you sang to it. I wanted one so bad, but I never won.

As we got older, went alone, or went on school rewards (it was across from the intermediate school [4th & 5th grade] "good" students were rewarded every quarter) I remember going up to the DJ both and requesting songs on the request sheet. For some reason when I think of the music at the skating rink I always think of this. I must have been there when I first heard it or something.

Long live Castle Skateland! It is still there! I went to Google and did and image search to show you all and who is the first person I see? Earl! He goes to a lot of roller derby events and I guess they had one at Castle Skateland. Check them out here. You can see some of the stuff I was talking about in the background of his photos :-)
