Book Review - Bossypants

Erikajean Jean gave I Liked It to:
Bossypants
by Tina Fey

Book Description:
Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately half-hearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon -- from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

(Includes Special, Never-Before-Solicited Opinions on Breastfeeding, Princesses, Photoshop, the Electoral Process, and Italian Rum Cake!)

My Thoughts:
I liked this book; very funny, entertaining and a good reminder to just "be yourself." There is definitely a little "girl power" aspect to this book - though I'm sure Tina Fey would want me to say it is empowering period - no matter who decides to pick up this book. She points out a lot in the book about her struggles and some of the injustices in the comedy and TV world and how she pushed through them and proved a few people wrong along the way. The book was pretty funny, but there was no laughing out loud for me. Just a lot of "ha!' moments.

This book didn't receive more than 3 stars from me because of how it was laid out. I'm not a big fan of lists and how-to points, even if they are a bit humorous. I don't care to read bits of SNL script, charts and I don't really need pictures in my books :-P Some of the references were lost on me, but overall I "got" most of it... even though I don't watch 30 rock (she doesn't spend but a couple chapters on it) and I only watch SNL when I'm interested in who is hosting!

Over all though, good book. If your a fan of Tina Fey, I'm sure you'd like it! It's a quick read and you can definitely tell Tine Fey wrote it. You can hear hear when your reading it.

  1. THANK YOU for this review! I've heard several people talk about how great this book is, but I've still hesitated to get it. I was thinking of listening to the audiobook version, but it sounds like there could be some translation issues with the pictures and such. I don't watch 30 Rock either (just the first half of the first episode, and never went back after that) and, like you, I almost never watch Saturday Night Live. This was just the info I needed!
