Funky Feet

I snapped some pictures the last time I went for a walk. This picture was nothing spectacular so I just kinda blew by it on the computer....but I was looking at my photos again and I noticed those feet.

Weirdest bird feet I've ever seen!

DSCN3444 (3)

So the naturalist in me (I worked exactly one season in the past as a naturalist giving live animal talks and leading hikes) had to figure out what kind of bird this was. It looks like it is an American Coot. I would have thought it was just another duck if it weren't for those feet!

New Computer!

I FINALLY have  new computer! I am hoping that means I can get back to geocaching, picture taking and blogging (Do I have any readers left?)!

....now where did I put that GPS?

Great Grandpa's Table

My Great-Grandpa's Table got a fresh coat of paint and now lives on my patio. I also did some quick cushions (too quick if you notice my dumb mistake). Anyway, I LOVE it. It's in the 70's and 80's. This week... But I work during the day - maybe I can eat a chilly breakfast out on the table? I'll have to enjoy it on the weekends ;-)

I don't know what, but it definitely looks cuter in black & white...

I've had a lot of Craigslist success in the past. I've gotten a few babysitting jobs and even a nannying job. I've only been on ONE interview where I said NO way. I've actually had more success with Craigslist than Care.com....

Anywhoo. I wanted to write this post because I made my first Craigslist PURCHASE this weekend. This sleigh bed frame for $65 (a STEAL, in my opinion). I asked they guy if he'd deliver for an extra $20, and he said yes! Thank-goodness, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get it home.

Ignore my wrinkled sheets. I don't iron them, ain't nobody got time for that!!

I'll be keeping my eye out for some new night stands, hopefully ones that match (each-other & the bed) and I have some fabric for decorative pillows, but I'm saving that task for another weekend!

Above my bed I have some fabric covered canvases covering two windows. The windows have to be covered because I get street light at night and blaring morning sun. It was a quick fix, but I'm trying to think of a better one (bigger canvases?) An ideas!!!??

Crochet Flip Flops

A friend found these cute baby sandals and wondered if I could make them (I could and did!). There is a free pattern over at Whistle and Ivy. She even has some videos to go along with her instructions - super easy. For me, the pattern ran too small. I ended up making the larger size(6-9mo.) and if I remember correctly they ended up being 3.5 inches long. The middle size (3-6mo) ended up around 3 inches long.

If I end up making them again I will probably make the top strap skinnier. I thought they looked fine but once I saw them on the tiny baby feet the top strap looks too thick - but sill super cute!

I've also been making washcloths/dishcloths while watching Big Brother (my FAVORITE summer show), riding the bust to work and on my lunch break. What can I say, I like to make use of my time! I found a really good pattern that doesn't require much thinking. Three of these will be included in a gift for a soon to be born a baby boy. I'm not quite sure what I will do with the rest but I figure they are cute little gifts (paired with a smell-good body wash) for people here and there if I don't have anything. Maybe even guests? Who knows, maybe I can sell a few...

Nails, Babies and Mouse Ears!

Apparently now I like painting my nails.... waiting for them to dry is another story! This photo is after a whole week of wear. I think they held up rather nicely. These colors were from my tub of random colors. I love the purple, but it only matched my outfit on Monday ;-)

In other news... Baby cacti!

I recently made this 2 shirt for someone who is giving it as a gift for a 2 year old's Micky Mouse themed party...

Gettin' Festive

It is super hard to do your own nails.... They're not perfect, but they will do!
Happy early 4th of July!

Here is may latest bit of craftiness. I still need to work on the whole attaching limbs thing(any tips?). I'm just not sure I have that part down yet... I think it could look a little more seamless. The eyes are sewed on felt circles. I didn't want to use buttons, because I included this in a gift for a baby. and the small safety eyes didn't seem all that "safe" to me.

It occurs to me now that I should have taken a picture for size comparison. This little guy is pretty small. It could stand in the palm of your hand with it's trunk reaching out over your finger tips. I don't know that I will be making anything THIS small again. It was super difficult, but turned out pretty good!

I stumbled onto Kumihimo when looking for an easy friendship bracelet for kids to make.... Here I am a week later with a finished project of my own!

This necklace was done by "braiding" using a foam disk, some string and some beads. I looks kind of crazy but it was very easy to do, and braided up quickly.

Kumihimo in the works

I got started with this tutorial (no beads), and then once I was comfortable I moved on to adding the beads with this tutorial. I purchase my disc online here. It was a nice set that came with bobbins and a weight. All you need to get is the string, beads, e6000, and end caps!

As for the pattern and bead placement:
Stripes (red on top & bottom, white on the sides)
Stars (All blue except white top right and bottom left)

Patio Cacti

My patio cacti are blooming again! It's amazing the beautiful flowers you can get when a pack-rat isn't snacking on the buds.

All set for Flag Day and 4th of July!

....I should really pull off those tags!

Do you decorate at all for Independence Day?

Desert Find

I went for a little hike this morning at Catalina State Park. I kept my eyes out for photo ops and spotted this awesome snake skin!

Solar Lights

I suspect a pack-rat has been visiting my porch every night and eating up my plants. In order to deter the creature I made some of those solar lights I've been seeing all over Pinterest. I didn't do ANYTHING other that take apart the lights and pop them in a small Mason Jar.

Solar light before

Jar + top of solar light (no tools required)

AND I think it is keeping the packrat away!! I have lost 6+ buds and now LOOK... Flowers on the way!

In Bloom

This is one of the few cacti on my porch that is NOT being gobbled up by some awful creature (my guess is a packrat) :-(

Remember this find from last week? It's been upgraded (read-on)!

First I pulled off the ugly pink vinyl fabric. Underneath it was more pink. This time a pink velour type fabric, which I am assuming to be the original. I also found some labels.

From what little I could find online. My piece is a reproduction piece from the mid 1950's. It hails from Michigan (like most of my family!).

I don't know what this label is from. Maybe the people who ordered it? Reupholstered it? Anyway, I'm guessing this chair was in Illinois at some point in it's life. I couldn't seem to find an information on the name.

I purchased my very first "power tool" and got to work. I didn't want to deal with taking the original fabric off and replacing the pad, since both were in great condition... and I wanted this to be a quick project. So I put my fabric over it. Luckily it was fabric I had in hand (remember this project?).

It is not perfect, but it works for now. The chair itself has some scratches and dings that I want to take care of later....

Designed & Stitched by ErikaJean

I have always used patterns done by others.... this time I decided to switch it up. I designed this beet with the mad beats and stitched it up on a tea towel.

My music notes suck, but other than that... I love this little guy! There is a saying next to him that I found online. It's trademarked so I didn't post it. It is the vegetable version of "Let-us turn-up the beat."

I wonder what the beet has on his iPod?

Gossip Bench / Phone Table

My mom and I had the day off work today (Thanks Caesar Chavez!) So we did a little shopping and stopped by the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. We came across this cute phone table / gossip bench and I just HAD to have it! It was a good deal and in pretty good condition, so we purchased it and squeezed it into the car.

I am going to have to get a few more babysitting jobs before I can afford the fixing up materials I need (and I have to research what I need). But I can't wait to get my hands on it. I might go-ahead and do the reupholstering first so I can live with it ;-)

Fluffy sugar coated marshmallow deliciousness. Is there anything better?

I decided to make some bunny shaped peep garland. with a quick Google search I was able to find a template. I used felt that I had on hand, which will make my stash a bit smaller (thank-goodness!). I did have to buy some beads for the eyes and noses though.

These will probably get hung up at work.

Update: Okay so I made some more and just used puffy paint for the eyes and nose. SO much easier. Why do I always try to make things more complicated than they have to be?? Here they are drying...

Do you like Peeps?

Seven Falls

I've been wearing a Fitbit for the last couple of months.... it is basically a high-tech pedometer. It calculates my steps, miles and calories burned (you can see more if you get a higher priced model).  It syncs to the Fitbit site when you are near your computer and various programs like MyFitnessPal.com. Pretty neat stuff. Helps me realize how LITTLE walking I do at work and motivates me to get up and take a lap every once and a while!

I usually average about 6-7,000 steps a day.... but on Sunday I had 28,000+ steps! Crazy!!

Why so many steps?

I hiked up to Seven Falls! Officially it is a 9 mile hike, however my Fitbit had me down for a total of 11.91 for the day. That total includes the whole day's activities though (running around the house getting ready, walking to/from various places). It was a fairly easy hike, but the distance was crazy. I have blisters on the bottoms of both feet to prove it!

The destination was worth it though. WATERFALLS!

I know my video sucks, so here are a few snap shots...

7 Falls

The pools were FREEZING, but there were a few brave people (kids) in the water. I couldn't resist sticking my feet it for a few minutes, bbrrrr.

Saw this road runner on the hike back.

I was with non-geocachers but I might have to tackle this one again if there are caches up there!

Bunny Hats

Made these cute bunny hats for Ashlei(go visit her blog!), who is expecting twins! She picked out the pattern last week, and I got to work...They are small, so they crocheted up super quick.

I used Lion Brand Homespun, Bulk (5)
